Super Mario 3D Land hands-on preview

Super Mario 3D Land is the next "big" Mario title. Nintendo has made a few changes to the traditional 3D Mario formula which have made Super Mario 3D Land a different Mario title, are they good changes?

Before I start, I just want to mention that I’m not a hardcore Mario fan. Don’t get me wrong, I love the italian plumber, I’ve played most of his big games, but don’t expect me to get into the intricate details.

As I’ve stated before, Super Mario 3D Land is a different title.

Some may find the differences annoying or even pointless…but I found them to be good. What the folks at Nintendo have done is used the traditional side-scrolling (other wise known as ’2D’) Mario template and added some Super Mario 64 into this sweet recipe. Super Mario 3D Land is a 2D Mario game turned into 3D, literally.

Another new feature, is that the camera angle will often change to highlight the, should I say, 3D-ness of a event. You can see that put into action in the trailer. It’s a good addition, because some of the events do really look awesome in 3D.

The graphics are great. The enviroments are bright and surprisingly detailed. Mario’s model looks fantastic and the enemies have also received the same treatment in the model department, too . The 3D effects are also good. It’s a nice depth effect, but with sprinkles of pop out 3D added in. The 3D effects look even better when the camera angle changes as showcased in the eShop trailer.

One minor problem I found with Super Mario 3D Land is that Mario is slow…maybe Mario has been eating too many mushrooms, or Nintendo just wanted a change, I don’t know. All I know is that Mario is slow, however, that problem can easily be solved by making Mario run, which is done by pressing Y (dash button) but you’ll have to hold of it, which is a bit of an inconvenience.

All in all, Super Mario 3D Land is definitely a Mario title you’ve never played before. Which is good. It’s great to see that Nintendo has taken time to shake up the traditional 3D Mario formula. Super Mario 3D Land is a definite contender for 3DS Game of the Year. After playing the demo, I am now more anticipated for Mario’s return to 3D.
