Has Metroid's 25th Anniversary gone unnoticed?

Yesterday marked the 25th anniversary of Nintendo's acclaimed Metroid series, but has Samus Aran and her birthday been forgotten?

Metroid may not be one of Nintendo's big selling franchises when next to the likes of Mario or Zelda, but there is no denying that Samus has had one hell of a 25 years. Being a massive fan of the franchise along the way it's really disappointing to see Nintendo aren't doing anything to commemorate such a milestone of one of their creations. Obviously I would never expect anything close to the celebrations made for Mario and Zelda because those franchises are much more 'acclaimed' but it would have been nice to at least have the anniversary acknowledged, is a virtual console release of Metroid II or some form of Club Nintendo merchandise too much to ask?
